The demand for ‘perfect’ fruit and vegetables means much of our produce is discarded -- tragically leaving people hungry and damaging the climate.
Americans throw away almost as much food as they eat (literally about 50%) because of a “cult of perfection”, deepening hunger and poverty, and inflicting a heavy toll on the environment.
Globally, about one-third of food is wasted: 1.6 billion tonnes of produce a year, with a value of about $1 trillion. If this wasted food were stacked in 20-cubic meter skips, it would fill 80m of them -- enough to reach all the way to the moon, and encircle it once.
All efforts to reverse our produce waste cycle not only helps our farmers, but the entire population of our world as a whole.
