CURATOR'S NOTE:.You wouldn’t swallow a spoonful of toxic cosmetic ingredients. But in some ways, smearing them under your arms in the form of deodorant or antiperspirant may be worse.
“When you eat something, it’s broken down by your liver and digestive system,” says Heather Patisaul, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology at North Carolina State University. “But when you put something on your skin, there are times when it can enter your bloodstream without being metabolized.”
Experts like Patisaul are worried certain compounds in antiperspirant and deodorant could cause or contribute to developmental or reproductive issues, as well as cancer. Here are 4 deodorant ingredients of concern:
Parabens - Used as preservatives in deodorant, research suggests they may interfere with the way your body produces and regulates estrogen and other hormones and may promote the growth of cancer cells.
.Aluminum - Typically found in antiperspirants, this metal can cause “gene instability” that can cause changes that may promote the growth of tumors or cancer cells..Triclosan - Is added to many products in order to prevent bacterial contamination, and to kill bacteria on the skin. Some studies have linked triclosan to unusual hormone activity and the operations of genes..Phthalates - Help deodorant stick to your skin. They also appear to disrupt “androgen function,” that could impair reproductive ability in men, fetal development in pregnant women, lower IQs and higher rates of asthma. (~ from Markham Heil, TIME Magazine).Choosing an all natural deodorant free of these ingredients is a safer, healthier option.
